Difference between Essential & Synthetic oils

This is something I get asked a lot! What we think is natural is not always the case!

For example do you think a strawberry scented candle is synthetic or natural?

It's actually synthetic, a strawberry can't be made into an essential oil so to get the strawberry scent it needs to be man made!

Definition of essential oil

A natural oil typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic odour of the plant or other source from which it is extracted.

Definition of Synthetic fragrance oil

Synthetic fragrances are high performance scents that are composed of synthetic materials. The ingredients used in synthetic fragrances are man-made. Synthetic aromatic raw materials have either been chemically created (mostly from petroleum), or started as naturals and have had their chemical structure modified.

Essential oils

can boost your energy, relieve headaches and migraines, calms nerves, helps focus, relief for different skin conditions, can be used for pain relief, sore muscles and joints and help to reduce stress.

Fragrance oils have common side effects such as headaches, dizziness and rashes. Chemicals found in man-made fragrances include phthalates, which are endocrine disruptors, and benzene derivatives, aldehydes, and toluene, which are known carcinogens.

So when you're looking for naturally scented products look for essential oil blends rather than fragrance blends.
